ToggleAvocado Lake
210 acres. Sandy beach. Kings River water. 20 minutes from Fresno.
Avocado Lake Park is the valley’s most accessible swim-and-picnic destination — a rare corner of Fresno County where you can actually wade into the water from a real sand beach instead of scrambling down a rocky bank. No motorboats to dodge, no crowds to fight, and enough shade and grass for a full day out.
The lake has an unusual origin: it’s the pit. In the early 1950s, the gravel used to build nearby Pine Flat Dam was quarried from this very site, leaving behind a deep excavation that filled with Kings River water. Fresno County signed a lease with the Wildlife Conservation Board in 1957 and turned the former quarry into a public park — stocking it with fish, building picnic shelters, and developing the surrounding 210 acres into one of the oldest public swim lakes in the region. Decades on, it’s become a multi-generational tradition — the kind of place where grandparents point to a picnic table and say, “we’ve been coming to this same spot since the ’70s.”
The Kings River feeds the lake, which keeps the water moving and swimmable through the long valley summer, making it the go-to spot when the heat pushes past 100 and the pool at home stops cutting it. Weekends bring extended families claiming picnic tables before 9 a.m., kids cannonballing off the beach, and the low hum of grills going from late morning straight through sunset. Weekdays are quieter — often just a handful of anglers working the shoreline for bass, catfish, and crappie, and the occasional kayaker drifting past.
Bring fishing gear. Bring the dog. Bring the kids. Bring a canopy if you’re staying all day — the shade fills up fast once the temperature climbs.

⚠️ Safety note: Swimming is not recommended when water releases from Pine Flat Dam are active — currents become significantly faster and more dangerous. Check with the park before swimming, especially in spring.
