What Is Christmas Tree Lane?
Christmas Tree Lane began with a single act of kindness.
In 1920, a child who lived on North Van Ness Boulevard passed away. To support the grieving family, neighbors decorated the trees in front of their homes with lights. What started as a simple gesture of compassion soon became a yearly tradition.
Today, Christmas Tree Lane stretches about 2 miles and includes nearly 140 homes and approximately 300 decorated trees. The display features more than 2.5 million lights, creating one of the most iconic Christmas displays in California.
In over a century, the tradition has only paused twice:
• 1941 due to wartime restrictions
• 1973 during the national energy crisis
