San Joaquin River
San Joaquin River
The San Joaquin River is the second-longest river in California and runs along the north edge of Fresno. It begins high in the Sierra Nevada, flows into Millerton Lake behind Friant Dam, and continues west past Fresno and Madera toward the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. For people in the Fresno area, the river is a close-to-home place to walk, picnic, watch wildlife, and enjoy time outdoors.
Much of the land along the river near Fresno is part of the San Joaquin River Parkway, a long stretch of parks, trails, and nature areas. Only some parts of the parkway are open to the public, so it helps to know where to go.
How to Access the San Joaquin River
– Lost Lake Park – A large county park near Friant with picnic areas, camping, trails, and river views.
– FINS (Friant Interactive Nature Site) – A free nature site next to Lost Lake Park, home to the San Joaquin Hatchery. A short trail connects the two.

Visitor Tips
Check each site’s hours and rules before you go, since some areas have limited days, parking fees, or seasonal closures. The river can be cold and fast, even in summer, so keep a close eye on children near the water. Bring water, sunscreen, and good walking shoes.
